The City of Cape Town has endeavored to ensure the CTFFF reaches specific Green Goals. The target is to minimise the overall carbon footprint of the 2010 FIFA event. Green goal targets will be set , measured and monitored. These will be reported on and communicated to the residents and visitors to the CTFFF on a regular basis.
The sectors that will be targeted during the CTFFF in an attempt to reduce the overall environmental impacts are:
1. energy,
2. solid waste, and
3. water conservation
4. Transport, mobility and access
5. Landscaping and biodiversity
Broad overall actions are to be adopted to achieve the objective of mitigating any negative environmental impact. Where the negative impact cannot be mitigated, carbon offset will be considered by investing in projects that reduce greenhouse gases.
Energy
Fossil fuel based energy consumption will be reduced and where possible replaced by renewable and/or clean energy. Green Energy from the Darling Wind Farms will be purchased from the City of Cape Town to offset any fossil fuel based electricity consumption. Generators used onsite will be fueled by biodiesel wherever possible.
Solid Waste
Solid waste will be dealt with using a multi pronged approach to avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle in an attempt to divert waste away from the already over capacitated landfills. Where reduction and recycling is not appropriate biodegradable products will be used.
Water
Water conservation methods will be adopted, in order to minimize water wastage through efficient water usage for cleaning and toilets. Drinking tap water will be encouraged as apposed to bottled water.
Transport, mobility and access
Promote energy efficient and universally accessible mobility and minimise air pollution
Landscaping and biodiversity
Promote indigenous landscaping and enhance biodiversity
